The Commission on Economic Opportunity for the Greater Capital Region, Inc. (CEO) announced today that their Early Head Start and Head Start programs passed their triennial audits with flying colors. A team of experienced and committed Head Start examiners from throughout the United States was on site for a week in early December and completed the extensive field work associated with this important review. The purpose of the review is to ensure that the funding for Head Start and Early Head Start programs is effectively employed according to federal specifications. More specifically, there are more than 1700 federal mandates used for regulating the programs. CEO’s programs were found to be 100 percent compliant with all 1700 mandates.
The federal onsite monitoring review – a week-long audit by seven content experts – reviewed all content areas including Education, Special Services, Mental Health, Health, Safety and Nutrition, Family and Community Partnerships as well as Program, Design & Management which included Human Resources, Fiscal and Governance (Board of Directors & Policy Council). In the closing ceremony, auditors congratulated CEO on their idealistic program and praised staff and CEO’s Board for their hard work in effectively addressing and meeting the needs of the children and families they serve.
“I am very proud of our record and of the program, which has provided more than 15,000 Rensselaer County residents for over forty years with an early childhood education and child development program,” stated Karen E. Gordon, Executive Director. I am also proud of our staff, and their diligence, commitment and consistent adherence to standards of excellence. This program would not be possible without their dedication,” continued Gordon.
Head Start is a federally funded comprehensive child development program that was created to help economically disadvantaged children prepare for school. More than 90 percent of Head Start children live at or below the poverty level and would not receive comprehensive developmental services at such an early age if not for this program.
Gordon and CEO’s Board of Directors, Policy Council and management team have now set their sites on achieving a nation wide recognition of being identified as a Head Start Program of Excellence.
